Q&A From a Recent School Visit

Have You Always Wanted to Be an Author?

Yes, pretty much. Reading has been a consistent for me…always. And I’ve always had quite an imagination. I love that a book can take you miles away and worlds away from wherever you may be. It can also bring laughter and wonder to a person. I’ve always wanted to be someone that can make another person’s life a little bit better. A good way for me to do that is with words. That being said, I did have some serious Broadway fantasies as a child.

Any Odd Jobs?

A few! I was once what’s called a “devil stick demonstrator/performer”. You basically hold these two sticks and twirl a bigger, fancier stick (with the other two sticks) in a variety of cool ways. It’s a hidden talent that I have no idea what to do with but I have hope that it’ll one day become an Olympic sport. On a more “professional” note, I also worked as a reporter for a number of years – both in sports and news.

Where Do You Get Your Inspiration?

Life, my children’s lives, travel, people in grocery stores.

Any Hobbies?

I love to travel! I live near the mountains so I love to snowboard and if I’m near water and a beach, I’ll jet ski. I also love to dance and will until I’m 100. I also enjoy just chilling with my family and friends and watching my children (I have two) in all of their athletic and artistic endeavors.

How Were You When You Were Younger?

I was shy, yet outgoing. Very imaginative – a classic ‘overthinker’. The first eight years of my life, my mom worked regularly as a jazz singer so music was a big part of my life and has continued to be. I played a few instruments and enjoyed listening to just about every genre of music. Music has always been therapeutic for me. That being said, as a child I felt like a bit of an outsider – at least in the small town in Indiana that my family moved to when I was 9. Looking back at it, that’s not a bad thing but when you’re young and you “don’t quite fit” it can be hard. I did enjoy sports though, mostly soccer, and I wasn’t bad. When I got into college, I got into reporting and had no choice but to come out of my somewhat shy shell.

How Did You Feel When You Sold Your First Book?

Honestly, speechless. Literally, I went mute with shock. I remember I had a lunch date scheduled with a friend that day and I literally just sat there and didn’t say anything. The first book I sold was “Hello, Mr. Moon” and it had been rejected many times. But I believed in it and the last publishing house I submitted it to accepted it.

Any Goals for the Future?

To continue writing, of course. I have many books I’m sitting on so hopefully they’ll find their publishing homes. My husband and I also run a business, Apps Plus Software, (he is a software/mobile app designer and I am a web designer) so for that to continue to grow would be wonderful. Other than that, lots of travel and lots of love!
